Psalm 127 Summary - 5 Minute Bible Study

Psalm 127 Short Summary:

The message of Psalm 127 is that all success and security come from the Lord, and without him there is none to be found. The worker and the watchmen will only be effective in their work if God is on their side. God is the giver of all gifts, one of His greatest gifts is children. A man whose house is full of children is like a warrior whose quill is full of arrow.

Psalm 127 Summary

AUTHOR:

  • Psalm 127 was written by David’s son, Solomon.

NEW TESTAMENT REFERENCES:

  • No Known New Testament References.

THEMES:

  • God is the source of all success and security.

  • Children are a blessing and reward from the Lord.

DEFINITIONS:

  • Quiver (127:5) – A quiver is the portable container that holds an archer’s arrows on the battlefield.

OUTLINE:

  • GOD IS THE ONLY TRUE SECURITY (127:1-2):

    • Solomon began Psalm 127 reminding his readers that a person will find no true security outside of God.

    • He wrote, “Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain” (127:1).

    • These statements are significant coming from Solomon because he was the richest man of his generation. If anyone had the resources to secure a house or a city, it was Solomon.

    • These builders and watchmen work up early and went to bed late, they were constantly and anxiously working away to complete their work in hopes of finding some security.

    • In contrast, those who look to God for their security rest easy and find peace in Him.

  • GOD’S BLESSING OF CHILDREN (127:3-5):

    • Solomon said that one way a man can secure his house is through having children, but he is also quick to remind his readers that children come from God.

    • Solomon wrote that children are like arrows in the quiver of a warrior. They are an honor to their parents; they are God’s gift to a family for their reputation and protection.

APPLICATION:

  • In our culture, especially in my generation, children are often considered a curse rather than a gift. They are looked at as a burden, a financial liability, and as a hinderance to achieving one’s ideal lifestyle.

  • Abortion and birth control have never been more popular.

  • This is one example of how our culture has lost touch with its Creator. Satan has woven this negative narrative about children into the minds of a generation, and he’s been very successful at changing the way people look at kids.

  • Satan is telling us they’re a curse and a burden, while God is telling us they are a reward, and Jesus is telling us they are a model for those to hope to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

  • Whose narrative have we been believing?
